The City conducts citizenship ceremonies under the authority of the Australian Government and in accordance with the Citizenship Ceremonies Code which states that “Councils must hold a ceremony on Australia Day, or the three days prior or the three days after Australia Day”. The City has taken the opportunity to hold this year’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on 23 January 2026 at the Civic Centre to give the ceremony the formality that is expected of such an important occasion. People receiving Australian citizenship are to be regarded as the most important people at any citizenship ceremony and the focus of attention is required to be on them. Conducting the ceremony before Australia Day will also give the newly conferred Australian citizens the chance to participate in all Australia Day activities as a new citizen. Other benefits include increasing the number of conferees able to be included in the ceremony as well as the number of family and friends who are able to view and hear the ceremony in a more formal setting and location. An outdoor citizenship event also runs the risk of inclement weather intervening as experienced at previous Australia Day community events held at Reddall Reserve.
